Team Lakeland Firefighter Combat Challenge 2015 Competition Recap

ryan-lakeland-hammer-2015The Firefighter Combat Challenge is a unique fitness event that pits firefighters head to head through a rigorous, timed course testing strength, endurance, agility and pure grit. We had the pleasure of working with two talented firefighter athletes this year and we were proud to have them outfitted in Lakeland Fire Stealth turnout gear.

We are looking forward to cheering on Team Lakeland at the Firefight Combat Challenge World Challenge XXIV, which takes place October 19-24th in Montgomery, Alabama.

Here is a look back at the 2015 competition season – what a year for Team Lakeland!

Team Lakeland: Sean Sullivan

Team: Lakeland Fire

Department: Frankfort, Kentucky

Turnout Gear: Lakeland Stealth

Personal Record: 1:48.05

Sean finished the competition season with a 2nd place finish in the Over-40 Individual category at the Carlsbad, New Mexico, challenge on September 26th and 27th. Edged out of first place by only 0.05 of a second, Sean is proud of his performance at his final event on the road to World’s.

Moreover, his top finish earned him a prestigious recognition -- Sean earned enough competition points to finish as the Runner-Up in the Over 40 Grand National Championship standings for the 2015 season. This distinctive accomplishment is an accumulation of points for top finishes at events throughout the season, and demonstrates Sean’s prowess and dominance as a competitor in the Over-40 category.

Sean’s 2015 competition season consisted of 8 regional events with 8 individuals, 2 relays and multiple open and Over-40 tandems earning him 4 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals on the year.

“My final race in Carlsbad was a great finish to a better season than I could have ever imagined,” said Sean. “I am looking forward to putting myself to the test at the World’s competition. I feel like my performance has peaked and with my technique and turnout gear working in harmony, I am looking forward to another great competition finish to close out the year.”

Team Lakeland: Ryan Fitzgerald

Team: Lakeland Fire

Department: Mankato, Minnesota

Turnout Gear: Lakeland Stealth

Personal Record: 1:22.47

What a year for Team Lakeland’s newest member, Ryan! He competed this past weekend at the Firefighter Combat Challenge U.S. Nationals event and finished with a new personal record time of 1:22.47. Not only has Ryan earned himself a 2nd place spot on the national stage, his course run is the second fastest time in the world in the 2015 Season! What an accomplishment for Ryan, who competes for Team Lakeland and IAFF Local 579 out of Mankato, Minnesota.

“I raced a phenomenal competitor at Nationals and we both pushed each other,” stated Ryan. “Even though I didn’t get first place, I got a personal best time, beating my last time by 0.87 of a second. I am really looking forward to World’s, where I’ll have the opportunity to race fast, seasoned competitors and hopefully continue to improve my time.”

Ryan’s 2015 competition season consisted of 7 regional events earning him 3 gold and 4 silver medals on the year.
